Photo Tidying

What do you hang onto and cannot let go?

What is it that you keep or hang onto and simply cannot let go? Yet, you know the keeping of it is not useful, supportive or healthy for you?

For many of us it is mementos. Those items, big or small, that hold memories or significance.

Recently I have been going through photos. Years and years of photos. Thousands of them, kept and well preserved. Many were organized and labeled in photo albums. Even more kept loose, unlabeled and in boxes or bins.

A lifetime preserved in a single snap shot. Trips. Vacations. Family gatherings. Celebrations. People, places and events. All of which hold significance …

… for those who took the photos and kept them. Or, were passed along to you by a loved one.

You know it is time. Time to once and for all let them go. You realize the memories are not held in those items or photos and keeping them is heavy and often burdensome.

A daunting task that holds so much energy and power over you. It is emotionally painful, as you decide what to keep, what to pass along to another, and what to toss.

I recognize this is not easy. Quite often we set it aside to be dealt with another day. And yet, that day never comes. The day in which you know it is time to face this task.

The day in which you take a deep breath and let go of that which is no longer needed, no longer serves you, takes up much needed space, or holds you hostage to a past that no longer exists.

It is your choice. A personal one. One that we each must determine for ourselves. No one else can do this for you.

This is what I have done as I delve lovingly and respectfully into the years of photos kept. As I release them to others who may want them. Carefully curate those I do pass along or keep.

And as I release the rest, I say a prayer of gratitude and appreciation, all the while reminding myself that the memories are within me, not in the item or photo.
