Storage Space

Who buys a house with no closet? Wanna guess?

Who buys a house without a closet?

Seriously. Isn’t that one of the main aspects of a house you want most? Lots of closet space? Especially in California where basements and attics are a rarity. Garages and closets are king.

So, then, how did my hubby and I manage to buy a home that had no downstairs closet. None.

Where were we to hang coats, put shoes, dog leashes, hats and scarves, umbrellas? Not to mention other stuff handy and out of the way.

But, before you judge us … we didn’t even notice the lack of a closet once we felt the peace and breathed in the calm. And, I’ll explain that in a minute …

Truly, the house was a mess. The original owner had not lived in it for awhile, maybe years. It was dirty, old, and worn out.

It needed so many updates and fixes, that my hubby asked to see other houses. We looked at many, and yet, we were both drawn back to this one.

Initially, before we even moved in, we had the entire inside of the house painted and carpets replaced. Deep cleaning. Shelves lined with fresh paper. Plumbing issues fixed … when the water was turned on, the garage flooded from the washer knobs being frozen in the ON position!

Once those basics were done, in we moved. Boxes began to be unpacked and that’s when the reality hit, as I was putting away stuff that would go in a coat closet.

Where was the downstairs closet? I couldn’t believe there wasn’t one. How did we miss this rather important detail?

The view … and the peace and calm that radiates off it. That’s how we missed it.

The house backs a river channel, one in which huge ships sail through, along with yachts, sailboats, jet skis, row boats, and kayaks. Add to that, the water life. Geese, pelicans, blue and white herons, turtles, otters, sea lions, muskrats. Too many to even name them all.

The energy from the river permeates and infuses the entire house. And, our bedroom overlooks this heavenly view. We go to sleep and wake to this view every day.

Everything else faded into the background … the repairs and fixes, the updates, and the missing coat closet.

But, before I leave you hanging, my hubby did manage to put in a closet under the stairs. A tiny space. He calls it our “Harry Potter” closet under the stairs. And, recently he updated it with fresh wallboard, texture and paint, wired electrical to code (hubby is an electrician), hooks for coats and a rack for hats, shoes and scarves.
