Where are your secret hiding places for stuff?

Where are your secret hiding places for stuff?

You know, those places where you put stuff out of sight and out of mind. Like closets, drawers, cabinets, boxes, or under the bed … just to name a few.

I call them “hidey-holes!”

They are sneaky, secret little areas. Those places we put stuff to get them out of the way. Usually done during our futile attempts to organize.

Once hidden, we dust off our hands and feel a sense of accomplishment. After all, it feels good to have that stuff out of sight and out of mind because it no longer nags at us.

Somehow we then convince ourselves it is handled and no longer a problem. But, is it really no longer a problem just because it is hidden?

Of course not. We’ve just convinced ourselves, for the moment, that all is well.

For my household, with just my hubby and myself, we each have different ways of hiding stuff. Not just to keep things more organized and clutter-free in our home, but …

… to hide it from each other. Those areas we put stuff to insure it doesn’t get in the way, bother or be seen, by the other.

For me, from a young age, I learned to be a masterful organizer. I simply enjoyed putting my stuff away, making my environment look neat and tidy.

I was fascinated by the topic. You name the book on organizing, I read it, the class, I was there. In fact, I even taught many of them over the years. One of the most popular I taught was, “How Clutter Affects Your Money.”

However, here’s my little secret … all that well organized stuff was well organized excess.

It took me years to come to the realization that you need to PURGE FIRST, then organize. LET GO of stuff, before you put what’s left away.

Because, once it is put away, our minds convince us it is handled.

What were my biggest “hidey-holes?” You name the area, I had excess hidden there. I was shocked at how much stuff I truly owned, and … did not use.

So, where are your secret “hidey-holes?” Are you ready to come clean and clear out a few?
